GAM to Conclude the 1st Phase of BRT Project

Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) is in the final stretch to conclude the the first phase of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) infrastructure. GAM Transport and Traffic Management Director, Dr. Ayman Al-Smadi said that GAM is currently concentrating on finishing the outer curb stone in order to remove the barriers near the construction zone to launch an additional lane in each route as it has pledged at the outset of the project. It is expected to finish work on the internal and external curb stone for the first section of University of Jordan’s Mosque till the external patrols intersection in Yajuz by the end of the week. While work on the remote section of the University Bridge till the Press tunnel curb stone is likely to be completed by the end of next week. The Municipality started cleaning roads and removing construction leftover from the finished curb stone. By removing the barriers and launching additional lanes traffic will resume to its normal state. Dr. Smadi further clarified that the Municipality is putting the final touches on the traffic plan in preparation for the second phase of the project. This phase will include a 1.5 Km long section opposite from the University of Jordan in addition to constructing a lower section on Queen Rania Street, accommodating to three lanes for BRT and three main stations servicing the University of Jordan main gate, Agriculture Faculty entrance and the University Hospital. Dr. Smadi has affirmed that GAM designed stations and tunnels capable of accommodating to the number of students utilizing the BRT system and easing pedestrian traffic between the University and the opposite side. And also with the additional lane for BRT in this area a direct route for none students from Sweileh without the need to stop at the University maybe facilitated. Dr. Smadi also stated that the Municipality is preparing bid documents which will be released this week for both of the University of Jordan and Princess Basma Street sections.
