Commercial waste recycling project
Amman is one of the largest governorates in the Kingdom of Jordan and includes 50% of the population residing in the Kingdom. It is considered a major development, commercial, cultural, and industrial center. Greater Amman Municipality plays its role as the largest municipality in the Kingdom in providing street cleaning services and collecting, transporting, and treating the solid waste generated daily from the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors operating within its borders, where 22 regions belong to it. Based on the national strategy for solid waste management, the rate of waste production per capita is increasing, and this includes the accelerated increase in the quantity of commercial waste. This means that there is a high rate of waste that the Amman Municipality is burying in the landfill, which leads to contributing to the phenomenon of climate change and the rapid expiration of the life span of the landfill. Accordingly, there is a need to develop a strategic framework to recycle commercial solid waste for Greater Amman Municipality in order for achieving many environmental, economic and social benefits and maintaining Amman as a resilient, sustainable and green city.
The benefits of waste recycling programs can be summarized as follows:
01 Creating job opportunities: small investments in collecting recyclable and recoverable materials can produce real benefits for the community in creating job opportunities in the various programs.
02 Saving money by keeping recyclable and recoverable materials away from landfills, and immediate economic benefits are also achieved by reducing waste disposal fees and selling recyclable materials.
03 Reducing the costs incurred by the city for waste management in applying the recycling system as recycling reduces the costs of waste disposal due to the limited number of landfills and because of the lack of growing acceptance of waste incineration facilities. The selective/separate collection of wastes also allows for the most efficient exploitation of resources that can be reused or "recycled" in the production cycle.
04 Social benefits: Initiatives to regulate the recycling sector can contribute to improving societal acceptance of recycling workers and improving working conditions for workers in this field, most of whom belong to marginalized groups.
05 Contributing to supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) based on the use of recyclable goods so that they are sustainable and expandable.
06 Climate and environmental sustainability: In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions (particularly Methane), recycling systems reduce the negative impacts of the buried waste on the surface and groundwater, odors, insects, birds and other vectors of infectious diseases in landfills.
