Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) called on the citizens to take advantage of the services rendered by “Amman Explorer” through the website, www.ammancitygis.gov.jo . Director of Geographic Information System (GIS) Department, Engineer Hasan Al Kiswani, said that Amman Explorer launched by GAM is a new step forward to keep pace with the latest technological developments and use them to serve the city, save time and effort for the citizens to obtain accurate, updated information by using the best information resources available.
He also clarified that Amman Explorer offers several direct services online, namely, searching for directions by using the street name and the building number, detecting locations of lands and basins, as well as defining the categories of all pieces of land in Amman city.
The project can also explore the most important landmarks of the city, discover the dues on the pieces of land, the infrastructure of every street in the City, as well as the ability to report claims directly from the citizens to be transferred to the concerned parties at GAM to solve them, and eventually the citizens will be notified with the proper response through the e-mail or SMS.
Engineer Kiswani stressed the importance of applying GIS in all service institutions, since it is fundamental to implement different investment activities according to a database on time and place.
According to Kiswani, GIS is a computer system for database management, it can capture, save, restore, analyze, review, update, prepare, and form data within a specialized programs based on geographic information.
He pointed out that the Department automated most of GAM central sections and all the regions with GIS by using the most modern programs and techniques of GIS, to ensure smooth and accurate application of the procedures and relevant operations, to shorten the transactions of the regions and the departments, and to provide an accessible database to all the employees at GAM departments and regions.
The department also published online the organizational map of the website by using GIS which depends on locative database and information on the categorization and utilization regulations.
He announced the completion of a full electronic connection of the Lands and Survey Department with the GIS at GAM, aiming at following up on all lands transactions and categorization, for organizational purposes.
GIS represents a mutual platform for cooperation between GAM and other service units and organizations, especially that many agreements have been signed with service providers to create one central geographic database for all governmental agencies in a national information system.
He further emphasized that GAM is keen to improve the quality and quantity of its services, to reach what is called “Smart City”, in addition to opening the opportunity to officials and citizens to get updated information about the city.
GIS is marked its ultimate and clear saving of information, comprehending phenomena and observing dangers, providing information on maps to make them accessible for decision makers in the country, the economy and planning sectors in specific, preparing geographic maps and developing their data quickly and easily.
The GIS also helps in building a system with integrated units based on GIS applications and IT to restore and extract locative data and information.
It is worth noting that the GIS Department at GAM recently won two awards: the distinctive GIS achievement award which is given for the best websites using GIS the world over, and the ISO award, as the GIS Department was the first to win this award on the Middle East level.
