GAM Completes Prince Hussein Bin Abdullah II Square by the End of the Year, and Al Shmeisani Square Early Next Year

The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), completed the entire work of the upper tunnel of Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II square, in both sides, to and from the Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II street/ Marj Al Hamam, and by 3 lanes for each side. GAM carried out connecting the upper tunnel with Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II Street from the East side, completing 85% of the linking process to Marj Al Hamam Street. The Director of the Supervision and Projects Department, Mohammad Al Kharabsheh, stressed that the Municipality will complete all the works of the square located on the Airport Road by the end of this year, pointing out that the percentage of works in the lower tunnel from Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II Street to the airport, a two lane one-way, exceeded 70% The project, which GAM started in February last year (2009) with a cost of 23 million JODs, aims at solving traffic problems, easing the pressure on the Airport Road towards the Seventh Circle, in addition to securing access to the Fourth Circle in a record time. Eng. Al Kharabsheh clarified that the workflow of the upper bridge of the field from Marj Al Hamam to the Seventh Circle in one-way, has reached a completion rate of 80%. He explained that the concrete works of the bridge have been completed, and that work is going forward to link the bridge with Marj Al Hamam Street from the west, and the Airport Road towards the Seventh Circle from the north. The Municipality has carried out the works connecting Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II Street with the Airport Road towards Queen Alia Airport using one-way and two lanes ramp, in addition to the exit way of Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II Street on a length of 1200 meters, with two-way side and three lanes for each side. GAM has completed all of the Airport Road works under the bridge with a total length of 500 meters, including pavements, lighting, metal and concrete barricades. Eng. Al Kharabsheh noted that the works in the Western area, which were postponed due to the airport detour, and were reopened after the completion of the required works under the bridge, including the upper and lower tunnels of the bridge, are currently carried out now. Head of the Tunnels and Bridges Department in GAM, Amjad Al Attar, said that the final concrete parts were being implemented in the lower tunnel, pointing out that the work is done round the clock to be completed within the set schedule. In the same context, Eng. Al Kharabsheh estimated that Shmeisani Intersection Project will be completed in the first quarter of 2011, with a total cost of 19 million JODs. He said that the project is a main intersection of four phases; the first one is Al-Mukhabarat (Intelligence Department) tunnel (Shmeisani), which has been reconstructed with an additional sub-tunnel towards Al Ameen Street / Ministry of Industry and Trade. He noted that the concrete works and lighting of the sub-tunnel leading to Al Ameen Street towards the Islamic Hospital have been completed. However, the streets leading to King Hussein Street (Abdali), are currently under structure. The second phase involves establishing a roundabout to serve traffic flow, with a small bridge to insure a possible traffic movement from all the directions of the circle towards Suleiman Al Nabulsi Street / Abdali. This phase will be completed upon finishing the support beams in Shmeisani bridges and Queen Noor Street. Eng Al Kharabsheh noted that the third phase of the intersection, which includes establishing a two-way bridge (two lanes each side) linking Prince Shaker bin Zaid Street (Shmeisani), and Abdali towards the Palace of Justice on Suleiman Nabulsi Street, will be completed in the first quarter of next year. This is implemented in three stages; two of them have already been completed. The Municipality finalized two out of three stages of the fourth phase, which is a two-way overpass (two lanes in each side) along Queen Noor Street, linking the Fourth Circle and the inner circle, passing from the intersection of industry and trade, and including the construction of upper ring road, branching off Queen Noor Street down to Al Abdali region. Eng. Al Kharabsheh stated that the bridge will be set to connect a proposed bridge coming from Al Ameen Street, passing through the Directorate of Civil Defence, and connecting with Queen Noor Bridge in the direction of the Fourth Circle.
