The City Directorate of Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) launched an environment and health campaign to remove all negative aspects from Al Sukkar (Sugar) Market, to improve the general view, and to facilitate pedestrians’ movement on the sidewalks.
The City Manager of Amman, Engineer Tahseen Al Abbadi, said that the areas cadres and in cooperation with the security agencies removed all violations caused by random street vendors whose displayed products on the sidewalks were hindering the pedestrians’ movement in the market and the main streets of the city.
Abbadi considered this kind of trading as a negative aspect which the city suffers from, in light of the environmental, social and economical negative impacts resulted from displaying products of low quality and cheap prices, and foods that dont comply with the health conditions, in addition to the health hazards and their effects on the tradesmen sales.
The campaign was supported by the commercial circles and citizens who filed last year 51 claims against the street vendors, as well as other claims raised to GAM teams daily through phone calls.
The campaign also included removing the violations against intellectual property rights through confiscating all fake and copied CDs by the National Library team who accompanied the campaign, and issued violation tickets against the violators and sent them to the concerned bodies to take legal procedures against violations.
Al Abbadi confirmed that similar campaigns are to be continued, pointing out that a new program for this issue is under way, to be organized in two shifts, one during the day and the other during the night. Each shift will consist of 5 supervisors, GAM police officers, an officer from the City security center, head of wastes operations section, and a police force station. This program shall cover King Talal Street, Quraish Street, Al Sukkar Market, Faisal Street, Faisal Plaza, and the entrance of Talal Street and AL Nada Market.
Through this campaign, GAM implemented cleaning works for the five entrances of the Market, and they are: two entrances from Talal Street, one on Ibn Al Atheer Street, and two entrances on Quraish Street. GAM also upgraded the environment level and removed the health hazards in the Market.
The Market, which has been founded since the late twenties of the last century, has about 100 commercial stores, with several streets, namely, Rasheed Al Madfai Street, Al Khadraa, Ahmad Al Khateeb, and Al Balsam Street.
