GAM Launches Geographic Information Systems Unit

Greater Amman Municipality established its Geographic Information Systems Unit to enhance and promote the gathering and editing of information regarding the scientific and technological development in Amman, and to enhance coordination between GAM and its directorates, as well as with the concerned departments. Engineer Nabila Akayleh, president of the unit, stated that GAM has conformed to the scientific and municipal development, which implies on GAM the required duties to collect the information and data that help in serving GAM goals and aspirations. She pointed that the data is gathered through most advanced means and fast enough to make sure of the accurate and proper information on time. The unit applies a sophisticated IT-based that provides a comprehensive geographic information system that serves the local authority in meeting its objectives, notably land surveying, delivering services and levying taxes. Akayleh said that GIS unit helps in having fairly, quick and accurate decisions that help in accomplishing businesses on time. She noted that all data gathered by the unit will be used in control and monitoring systems, and in developing long-term comprehensive plans. The GIS unit is working through vital two-way system. The first is DIGITAL MAPS, which helps in converting the traditional maps into computerized ones that are saved digitally on CDs. The other part is DATABASE that processes the massive information and develops them efficiently to comply with the digital maps. Akayleh indicated that GIS staff has entered all the required information to the computer system prior to the technical procession, which is expected to start soon. The staff also prepared a BASE MAP for all of Amman areas, simultaneously with the developing of DATABASE for all of GAM directorates, by using the archived data and updating them through extensive analysis. Contents of the DATABASE are used in completing the digital maps, by helping in naming and numerating streets, organizing the populated areas, and in constructing building and houses, fulfilling job vacancies, receiving investments and acquisitions. The data also helps the Financial Department at GAM. Akayleh added that the current phase is crucial for GIS unit to lay down the foundation for the future phases. Once the GIS system is applied wholly at GAM and its directorates, the database will be updated automatically. The GIS unit will soon launch its website on the Internet as a link to GAM website. The site will provide citizens with the required information and services.
