Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) completed 40% of the pavement works that are planned to be executed during the night hours using basalt mix, a project initiated on 9 July 2010 on several streets of the Capital.
Director of Road Maintenance Department, Eng. Ahmad Khreisat, said that GAM will complete the whole space area of pavements during night hours, which amounts to 330.000 m2 with a cost of 2 millions JOD, before the month of Ramadan, pointing out that the space area already implemented reaches to 120.000 m2.
He added that pavement works are taking place at night through contractors, vehicles and workshops of GAM’s starting from 10:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m.
GAM finished the works in Zahran Street between the 5th and 6th Circles, Refa’a AL Ansari opposite to the University of Jordan, Usama Bin Zaid in front of Al Basheer Hospital, Al Muthana Ibn Al Harithah next to Al Wehdat Entertaining Park, Omar Matar opposite to GAM headquarters, Imam Bukhari in Jabal Al Taj, and the Streets; Ibn Sina and Arar in Wadi Saqra, and finally, Yarmouk Street.
The works in Jordan Street inside Al Hussein Camp, Saad Ibn Waqqas Street connecting Zahran Street with Mecca Street, and in Zahran Street between the 7th and the 8th Circles, the Streets: King Abdullah I in Marka, Khawla Bent AL Azwar in Al Zhour, and Ali Ibn Abi Taleb Street before GAM headquarters, are also finalized.
Currently, works are underway in Street Hatem Al Ta’ei, next to Abu Darweesh Mosque, Al Jaish Highway Amman- Zarqa, main street of Marj Al Hamam, Al Saheed (the Martyr) Street next to Jordan automotive trading garage, in addition to the precautionary maintenance workshops in several locations inside GAM boundaries.
He added that the decision to work during night hours was taken to avoid traffic jams and to finalize it before the month of Ramadan, pointing out that before applying the basalt mix scraping works are to be executed on the streets to be paved.
He clarified that GAM will use for the first time electronic sensors in paving some of the Capital’s streets.
He said “These sensors will shape the street sides’ decline to ensure the drainage process or rain water in proper engineering ways, by providing digital readings to the pavement mechanism to determine the necessary slope in the street before paving it”.
The next phase will include the streets: Al Shareef Hussein Ibn Ali, Al Shareef Abdel Hameed Sharaf, Khaled Ibn AL Waleed, Arar, Sate’a Al Hasri, and Ibn Sina at Al Abdali, the Streets: Princess Alia, Abdallah Ghosheh, and Husni Sobar in Wadi Es Seer region, and the Streets: Zahran, Abdel Men’em Riad, King Faisal Ibn Abdel Aziz, Saad Ibn Abi Waqqas, and Cairo street in Zahran region. Also the streets: the Martyr, Abdullah AL Louzi, Ahmad Tarawneh, and Umm Al Fadl in Al Jubeiha region. The works in Tlaa Al Ali region will include the streets: Al Mahmadiah, Ahmad Al Najdawi, and Abdullah Ibn Rawaha, in Marka region the streets: Al Jaish (the Army) and King Abdullah I.
Seven workshops specialized in road maintenance works and removing manholes during the same period will amend and rise up the levels of the manholes which were damaged or disfigured in several streets.
Using such kind of mixes on the Capital streets will positively affect the roads’ quality, as it is renowned for higher solidity and efficiency than other mixes, enduring, friction and decay resistant, saves the quantity of used asphalt, and it conserves the environment and city sustainability, through reutilizing the basalt marbles after rubbing them off when expired, unlike the current mixes.
GAM requested the citizens to be careful while driving at night, and to commit to the traffic warning and directional signs surrounding the working areas to achieve the highest levels possible of traffic safety.
