The Greater Amman Municipality is currently working on finishing a number of primary development projects around the capital on all aspects. Pertaining to the traffic issues, the municipality is about to complete its construction of the Khalda-Dabouq conjunction, which is expected to be open for the public officially on August 14.
The JD 6 million-conjunction comprises of a tunnel along the King Abdullah II road, and an upper bridge that links the Wasfi Tel road (Gardens Street) with the Dabouq area. There is also a roundabout under the bridge for motorists who wish to u-turn, besides pavements for pedestrians and other facilities.
Eng. Majed Abwah, GAM’s deputy assistant for the Engineering Affairs, said that the municipality has started its works at the conjunction last April, on the meeting point between the King Abdullah II road and the Wasfi Tel road (Gardens street). He pointed that this project is one of GAM’s “vital projects since it is distinguished with the significant role it plays in alleviating the frequent traffic jams at the area.”
What makes the conjunction more important is that it eases the travel over the road for those who head towards the northern parts of Amman, and those who wish to go to the Queen Alia International Airport highway. The project is being conducted jointly between the Ministry of Public Works and Housing and GAM.
Abwah emphasized that the project is vital for all residents in the area, where people find it hard to pass through in view of the traffic jams. “This conjunction is part of Amman Municipality’s strategic plans to apply long-term and short-term solutions for the traffic jams around the capital,” he said.
According to him, GAM has conducted so far about 38 conjunctions around Amman since 1999, and were outlined and implemented according to a feasibility study carried out, then, by the Public Traffic Department aimed at restructuring the traffic procedures around the capital.
Abwah also indicated that the Khalda project enhances the infrastructure and environmental aspect of the area, not to forget its economic advantage that demonstrates in easing time and effort on the public. Beautification activities were also added at the project, including a fountain, flowers and good-looking decoration.
