Greater Amman Municipality Receives Technical and Financial Offers for Amman Train Project

The Tendering and Procurement Department of the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) recently received the technical and financial offers regarding the feasibility study and initial design of Amman Train project, which include three main railways extending at 40km around the Capital. The first railway kicks off at Al-Mahatta terminal (where Amman-Zarqa light train stops), and goes through the Down Town, Ras Al-Ain, Wadi Amman, before ending at Marj Al-Hamam, on the international airport highway. The second railway, meanwhile, starts at Baytona Project (near the Old Ten Bridges) in southeastern Amman, and ends at the General Command of the Armed Forces. This railway runs through the Down Town, Abdali, and Mecca Street. The third railway links the Sports City Circle with Ras Al-Ain and Customs Department (Jumrok) Circle, to the south of Amman. The project’s feasibility study aims at providing the proper technical option for the executing company, whether to build a metro or light train network in the Capital. It is worth mentioning that Amman Train Project is being funded by the World Bank, as part of the Amman Development Corridor Project which is conducted by the Ministry of Public Works and Housing. The project also coincides with the completion of the final designs of the Bus Rapid Transit in Amman. The latter project was awarded last April to a British company that will set up, in the first stage, three new bus lanes in Amman by next October, despite the fact that buses will start operating the new lanes at the end of 2010.
