Greater Amman Municipality is still in the Process of Developing Marj Al-Hamam Junction

Deputy City Manager for Public Works, Engineer Fawzi Masad, said works continue at Marj Al-Hamam-Jabal Arafat junction as scheduled, with over 22% of the project completed. Masad said that the contractor has almost finished all the infrastructural works for the project which is expected to be completed by the end of 2010. The infrastructural works included surveying, dust works, and concrete pedestals. The project is worth JD20 million, part of GAMs efforts to solve the traffic jams in the Capital to ensure smooth flow of traffic along the international airport highway, as well as that between Eastern and Western Amman. The project also aims at creating sustainable urban and economic development in the area to serve the local community. According to Masad, the project comprises a four-level junction, at the intersection between the international airport highway and Jabal Arafat Street that leads to Marj Al-Hamam. The project also consists of a one-way upper bridge extending to 270 meters, heading from Marj Al-Hamam towards West Amman, plus two tunnels underneath the international airport highway; one links Jabal Arafat street with the highway, while the other links Jabal Arafat street with Marj Al-Hamam street. Masad noted that part of the international airport highway, estimated at 1.3 kilometer, will be rebuilt to include overpasses, traffic signs, lighting, and pavements for those with special needs. He said that the project will be linked at a later stage with Wadi Abdoun area through a six-way road extending to 6 kilometers. It is worth mentioning that Mayor of Amman, Engineer Omar Maani has laid down the foundation stone for Marj Al-Hamam project in June this year, as part of GAMs celebrations of the Independence Day.
