Launching the 1st Jordan Competition of World Cyber Games on Thursday

On Thursday, 5 August 2010, the 1st Jordan Competition of video games 2010, will be launched in Amman, with the participation of over 500 girls and boys, competing to win “the 1st Championship” in several cyber games. The competition will be running for 3 days at Al Hussein Cultural Center in Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) headquarters in Ras El Ein. The championship is organized by the International Federation of World Cyber Games/ Jordan, and sponsored by GAM and some Jordanian institutions of the private sector and specialized in electronic games and computer industry, in addition to several local and international media agencies. Mayor of Amman, Omar Maani, said: “We are thrilled to sponsor this exclusive event which goes in line with our strategy, to support local and international initiatives promoting Jordan from different economical and social aspects, especially that the initiative concerns the Jordanian youth, develops their skills and knowledge. This competition is a clear testimony to the success realized in the IT sector in the Kingdom which is accelerating and growing fast”. Maani unveiled GAM’s commitment to expand its activities to include new creative and innovative avenues, all within its constant search for diversity in programs which are, in turn, expected to contribute to promoting GAM’s position as an important strategic partner of the Government’s. He also stated that GAM is currently offering support to many national programs and constructive initiatives. On his part, Eng. Mohammed Kanakri, Director of World Cyber Games Federation/ Jordan, said: “this Competition is the first of a kind on local and regional levels; it coincides with the 10th anniversary of World Cyber Games inception, and includes over 15 million members from 90 countries. The Federation was founded 10 years ago as an individual initiative by some activists from South Korea, who could make it an international organization”. The aim of organizing the championship locally, according to Kanakri, is to attract the biggest audience possible amongst the Jordanian youth interested in the cyber games, which, in result, promotes Jordan’s international position in this vital sector. The primary estimations of 2010 have it that the annual developmental cost of this industry exceeds 162 billion USD, and that this field attracts over 220 million people of amateurs and professionals the world over. Kanakri added that the Jordanian Federation’s coordination with several specialized agencies from the public and private sectors is attributed to its interest in organizing this championship perfectly well, especially that GAM contributed to preparing and offering the headquarters of the championship, including the latest electronic and technical apparatus that is bound to enable the participants compete with sportsmanship to get the titles. He mentioned that the champs of this event will help create the main structure of the Jordanian team which will participate for the first time in the finale of the international championship of World Cyber Games, to be held in Los Angeles on 30 September 2010. He further clarified that the participants will be competing over a period of 3 days through 6 of the most popular and famous cyber games, be they PC Games, Play Station 3, and XBOX 360. The games are: Warcraft III, Starcraft, Tekken 6, FIFA 2010, Counter Strike, and Guitar Hero 5. Kanakri declared that the Championship headquarters provides the latest PCs and entertaining devices that offer the best experience and performance. More that 50 advanced game units have been prepared, in addition to facilitating arbitration and supervision of the games, and allocating special places for the audience. The championship program also includes many entertaining and artistic activities, with DJ, and contests for the attendees.
