The cars participating in the fourth Allgäu-Orient Rally that started on May 2 in the German city of Oberstaufen will arrive in Jordan the day after tomorrow, on Tuesday.
The Allgäu-Orient Rally in which 165 vintage cars will participate, aims at combating hunger and poverty in the world through its support of joint projects between the World Food Program (WFP) and the Jordanian Alliance Against Hunger (JAAH).
The spokesperson for the WFP in Jordan, Faten Al Hindi, said that the Rally “is considered a great opportunity to raise awareness about hunger and poverty.” She also added that organizing the Rally “embodies peoples’ ability to support humane efforts through such unique initiatives.”
The Rally is organized by the UN’s WFP in cooperation with the Mount Nebo Society which operates under the umbrella of the JAAH.
During the course of the Rally which extends from May 12 until May 18, the participating cars will tour various parts of the Kingdom; the Rally will start from Jaber near the Syrian border to Al-Azraq near the Saudi border, then to Wadi Rum through Al-Jafer, reaching Aqaba and moving towards Petra by the desert route, and finally heading to Amman where the cars will drive through the streets of the Capital.
The Rally will then visit Al-Shounah Al-Shamalieh via the Amman – Irbid – Um Qais route, return to Amman, and then move towards Mout Nebo and the Dead Sea, to finally return to Madaba.
Concluding the Rally, the participating cars will be donated by the drivers and sold in a charitable auction in Dahiet Al-Muhareb in Al-Mwaggar region. The proceeds will go towards supporting the Jordanian Food Bank and the JAAH, in addition to WFP projects. In 2008, the Rally cars were sold at a total of about JOD 80,000.
Along the route, the rally participants will distribute, in low-income communities, aid like children’s clothes and school items, in addition to providing 200 hearing aids for deaf children.
The Allgäu-Orient Rally launch party was hosted by the Oberstaufen Municipality in the south of Germany, and attendees witnessed a number of official Jordanian activities. Participating in the Rally are 350 drivers from 9 countries, including Jordan.
It is important to note that the Jordanian Alliance against Hunger (JAAH) was established in 2004 as a member of the Global Alliance against Hunger, and has partnerships with governmental and non-governmental organizations, the local community, and private sector organizations.
