Public Libraries Department Launches Website

The Public Libraries Department at the Greater Amman Municipality has launched its new website on the Internet (www.ammancity.gov.jo/amman _new/home.htm) which is linked to the main website of GAM. The step is part of GAM efforts to computerize all the libraries in Amman, a project that was launched at the beginning of this year under the instructions of Minisis system (Mini-based System for Creating, Managing Information Files) which is a highly developed and flexible database management system aimed for libraries. The system provides an electronic index that gives access for users to know more about the books and references available at the Central Library and its branches around the capital, through a simple and detailed search engine. A delegation of Jordanian and American students, who take part in the Media Awareness And Democracy Program in Amman, has visited the PLD and listened to a presentation about the department and its services since its establishment in 1960. The department also provides services through its IT centers that are distributed around Amman. There are 38 libraries and IT centers operating in Amman, equipped with more than 500,000 titles of books and references for all ages. These centers receive on average 1000 visitors a day. The delegation also toured the Central Library and its sections, including the Lending, References, Indices, Classification, Documentation, Children Books and Periodicals. The students visited the Public Information Center, which was recently launched in cooperation with the World Bank. They were also informed about the process that the Jordanian literal production is being restored and sponsored by the library. Upon their departure, the students received a collection of references, books and newsletters published by GAM.
