Health and Agricultural affairs Sector

The health and agricultural sector is one of the Municipality sectors and is concerned with carrying out its functions through the Municipality Law No. 18 of 2021 and the regulations and instructions issued thereunder. The sector's functions are to take the necessary actions and precautions to prevent the spread of diseases and epidemics, establish gardens and parks and work on their operation and sustainability, and increase the green space. These functions are implemented through three directorates, namely the Directorate of Health and professional Control, the Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, and the Directorate of Markets. The functions, operations and services are carried out by a qualified and distinguished cadre of about (4500) employees for all levels of employment.

 Directorate of Health and occupational Control (It has the following departments):

  • Department of Health and occupational Control.

  • Vector Control and Animal Welfare Department.
 The general objective of the Directorate:

The Directorate is responsible for taking the necessary actions and precautions to prevent the spread of diseases and epidemics in order to achieve Amman Healthy City within the municipal work and to realize the vision and mission of the Amman Municipality through the application of its applicable regulations and laws. This is done through inspections of economic installations, where approximately 120,000 rounds of inspections are conducted annually to ensure that the standards and conditions adopted in the field of health and professional control and inspection are followed up and applied in coordination with the concerned authorities.

 Functions of the Directorate:
  • Carry out health and professional inspections of economic installations, monitor the application of health and professional requirements, and take the necessary actions.
  • Carry out bacterial and chemical laboratory tests for foodstuffs and water through the laboratory section.
  • Conduct medical examinations for food handlers.
  • Issue disease-free certificates in addition to providing treatment services for the employees of the Greater Amman Municipality and the local communities through the Therapeutic Services Section.
  • Take the necessary actions to prevent health hazards.
  • Provide burial services.
  • Combat insects and rodents and process service requests provided by citizens in this regard.
  • Conduct surveys outside the boundaries of the Municipality.
  • Improve and implement established procedures in animal welfare.
  • Implement service requests submitted by service recipients regarding the spread of stray dogs, snakes, stray cats and the inconvenience caused by dog breeding.
  • Issue Dog licenses.
  • Control the breeding of stray dogs.
  • Raise awareness, educate and give awareness-raising lectures.

 

 Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry (It has the following departments):

  • Department of Agriculture.
  • Department of Parks and Combating Desertification.
 The general objective of the Directorate:

The Directorate is responsible for the establishment, operation, and sustainability of gardens and parks and for increasing the green space. It works to sustain and manage public green spaces implemented within the city of Amman and belongs to Amman Municipality, which currently covers an area of approximately 1207 km2 distributed among public gardens, parks, roadsides, median islands, intersections, and others. The number of parks and gardens is 149, of which 11 are parks, and 138 are gardens.

 Functions of the Directorate:
  • Carry out various farming works for gardens, sidewalks and median islands.
  • Establish traffic gardens and bird gardens and follow up on existing ones.
  • Produce and provide plant seedlings needed for the Municipality projects and take care of various agricultural seedlings.
  • Design and implement the work required for the sites belonging to the official and civil authorities.
  • Operate business and projects related to combating desertification.
  • Provide and ensure the sustainability of parks.
  • Provide hiking services and a safe environment for trips and healthy breathing space for the community.
  • Provide seating areas equipped with benches, tables and barbecue grills.
  • Provide entertainment services and games for children.

 

Directorate of Public Markets: (It has the following departments):

  • Central Market Department.
  • Slaughterhouses Department.

The current central market was opened in 1995 with a total land area of 168 dunams and a building floor area of 56,000 square meters. The establishment of the central market, which is the fourth in the capital's history, is aimed at ensuring the movement of horticultural products between producers and consumers and is seen as a service starting point for the Jordanian farmer, in particular, retailers and citizens (consumer).

 Functions of the Directorate:
  • Ensure that Jordanian agricultural products are marketed to serve Jordanian farmers smoothly.
  • Facilitate the task of producers, intermediaries, and consumers with mutual trust and transparency.
  • Guard and secure shops and facilities and enforce public safety requirements.
  • Slaughter and process incoming livestock and live poultry, and inspect them before and after slaughter.
  • Inspect the chilled or frozen meat, fish, poultry and entrails received by the department to determine their suitability for human consumption and seal them.
  • Take proper hygienic measures with discarded meat.
  • Determine the necessary health specifications to be observed by the butchers and workers and organize their periodic medical examinations.
  • Organize the sales process and supervise the meat market.
  • Take the necessary legal actions against anyone who violates the slaughterhouse regulations, whether inside or outside the department, within the boundaries of the Municipality.
